Manure management is an important issue in North Dakota with respect to groundwater and surface water protection. Siting of concentrated animal feeding operations has become an issue of concern. The occurrence and pattern of winter feeding of cattle along the Sheyenne River has been a focus of attention in recent years. The North Dakota Department of Health has regulatory responsibility over animal feeding operations. The NRCS has been developing a comprehensive nutrient management program for farming operations that include animal feeding.
